History
My father worked with textiles and my mother was an avid seamstress so texture, colour and the art of craft have been threaded through my life. I wove clay into the mix later in my life and that complimented my basket of talents.
I made my way to clay because the texture and malleability of the medium appealed to me. The versatility and range of expression offered by clay still fascinates me. It is singular in that it allows for delicate precision work as well as bold organic solid forms and countless variations in between those extremes.
Pottery is an ancient craft that predates literacy and is part of the earliest footprints of virtually every society. This prehistoric artform has penetrated every early civilisation from all over the globe and has been instrumental in understanding the origins and mysteries of antiquity.
Vision
My own work is inspired by my observations of everyday items in life. During a walk I’ll often collect seed pods or flowers whose filigreed design capture my interest. Or I’ll borrow a ring to trap it’s daring design in a mould. Through the year my studio becomes a patchwork of these rich pieces that have piqued my interest or sparked a flame of inspiration.
I am especially able to delve into a world of coloured texture during my trips to India and Egypt. The fractured past of these countries is knotted into the fabric of ordinary life and splashed all over their colour filled crafts and daily lives.
My fascination with these countries is a mirror of my fascination with pottery: the depth of history, the diversity of experience and the primordial organic dance of life has enthralled my curiosity and I am no where close to discovering the limit of what these countries have to offer or what I can accomplish with clay.
