Student Focus - Lise Wielart

Lise Wielart - Pottery Student

The success of my studio is largely due to the wonderful students I’ve met over the years who have come to love clay in their own way. I thought it would be a good idea to let my students express what they’ve learnt about ceramics and what they get out of pottery class

This will be a regular series and we’ll focus on a different student each time.

Here is a little about Lise Wielart’s relationship with clay in her own words….

I guess I was about 12, still in primary school, when I started pottery lessons. I think my mom got tired of the muddy clothes and muddy patches in her garden; so she took me somewhere to get "clean" mud!

I have been a cabin crew member for 32 years. For the last 12 plus years, I have been training safety and emergency procedures for cabin crew and dangerous goods and crew resource management for cabin crew and pilots.

Pottery class has become my rock of sanity in a crazy world. Clay doesn’t expect anything from you. It doesn’t talk back - it just takes what you throw (pardon the pun) at it.

Lises Work scaled

Handwork is definitely my preference. There are so many techniques to try, that I feel I will never have enough time to try them all. Then I look at wheelwork and there are so many things there that I want to try too. So I try wheelwork every now and then, but I can honestly say I always come back to handwork.

I think people think ceramics is a finite skill. In other words, they think they will do a short course and then they will know everything! I've had many people asking me why I still go to classes and they don't seem to get it when I say I learn something new every time!
