Student Focus - Sandy Godwin

I joined Sandy’s Pottery Studio 23 years ago when my friend, Linda Pfeifer, suggested I join her at pottery class.

Initially, it started as a hobby but developed into a passion when my children left home and I was gifted a wheel. Pottery became my life after children.

I now have my own private home studio, but still attend classes because I enjoy the interaction with the other students and it is always nice to spend time with friends that speak the same language. I also value Sandra’s wealth of experience and try out new shapes and projects in class.

I find the wheel is quicker and I have had more successes on the wheel. I am constantly trying to improve the form of my pieces and I feel I have better control on the wheel.

I use lace to create the patterns with glazes on my pieces. I have my favourite patterns and I’m always exploring new ways to use the lace and glazes to decorate my work.

People are often surprised at the lightness of my pieces as they expect hand made ceramic pieces to be very chunky and heavy. My work is light and delicate - like the lace I use as decoration.

I work most days in my studio but I am also passionate about my garden.
